GAGE: The one stop resource for business: About Us

GAGE About

The creation of GAGE and its mission

A true public-private partnership, the Growth Alliance for Greater Evansville (GAGE) was created in early 2007 because government and business representatives were searching for a comprehensive, focused approach to economic development. We recognized that efforts were being duplicated, preventing us from getting the maximum benefits from limited resources. We understood that economic development programs funded and undertaken collaboratively by government and private business could function more effectively. A new, strategic partnership was formed to cultivate an environment in which businesses thrive and jobs are created.

Guided by experienced professionals, representatives of business interests, government, the former small business incubator, and the University of Southern Indiana, a strategic plan for the economic development program was formulated. GAGE is a public-private, not-for-profit, 501(c) 3 corporation. It is governed by a 21-member Board of Directors from business, government and education who represent our service area. The Board of Directors works to ensure that GAGE fulfills its core mission of cultivating an environment in which businesses thrive and jobs are created.

GAGE’s goals are very specific. They include building on the excitement and growth in Downtown Evansville by developing, cultivating, and championing this thriving urban environment. Other goals include identifying opportunities for further growth, marshalling resources to realize the full potential of the area, and focusing public attention on the heart of the city.

Located in the heart of downtown is Innovation Pointe, which serves as the launching point for high-technology and knowledge-based businesses. 318 Main Street was renovated and transformed into a place that fosters growth of new and emerging businesses. Much more than a building, Innovation Pointe is an “idea place,” where concepts are transformed into job-generating enterprises.

Another emphasis of GAGE is an assistance program to serve businesses currently located in Evansville and Vanderburgh County. This one-stop resource provides all the services companies require to act on growth opportunities or effectively address challenges. This program is important because existing businesses will create more than 75% of the new jobs in our community. They are making payroll and capital investments right now.

In 2008, GAGE signed an innovative technology transfer agreement that holds tremendous potential for regional businesses. Crane Naval Surface Warfare Center, a U.S. Department of the Navy federal laboratory located in Southwest Indiana, is making its patents, as well as its research and development personnel and resources, available to regional businesses through its partnership with GAGE. Crane will also provide access to a wide range of advanced technology and skilled personnel that will substantially increase the likelihood that companies can develop new products and processes to expand their economic viability.

The GAGE mission is bigger than the sum of its parts. This collaborative effort is establishing its identity and moving boldly to provide comprehensive services and new strategies to bolster the Greater Evansville area business environment.
